Who is the program for?

It’s for all parents who have a child diagnosed with T1D.

Whether your child is or in their 20s!

It is for families who want to protect their child's future and improve their child's Type 1 diabetes outcomes, and understand that a Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction/Low-Carb nutrition strategy is the best method hands down to achieve this!

This program helps families transition to a low-carb lifestyle or helps you to dial in your family’s existing approach to low-carb.

It is for parents whose child is recently diagnosed, or you have been managing Type 1 diabetes for years.

Parents enrol in The Nutrition Effect program for various reasons:

  • They wanted to decide whether low-carb was right for them,
  • The parents have different views about how to manage T1D and wanted to learn together how they could make more informed decisions,
  • They were following a low-carb approach and felt like they were winging it, or they couldn’t quite nail it and weren’t getting the results they wanted and couldn’t understand why
  • They were cooking multiple meals for different family members and were exhausted and wanted help,
  • They were worried their kid wasn’t eating enough and not growing properly,
  • Their kid played sports and they wanted to know how to manage T1D and food before and after activity,
  • Or they simply wanted to know as much as they can about managing T1D

When my parents come into the program, I know they have both shared and specific needs and that’s why I build in both group and individualized support, so you can get your questions answered. I want you to feel heard and have the opportunity to share your fears, challenges and questions!

When you have this, your child feels better and you have more peace of mind.

You will recognize a normal glucose level and why we need to aim for normal blood glucose for our children. Once you know what to aim for and why, you will gain clarity on your goal, so you can create a plan for success, which will give you peace of mind for your child’s future.

Topics covered in this module:

✔  Where in the human body does glucose come from?

✔  What is a normal blood glucose level in humans?

✔  What occurs when blood glucose is outside normal range?

✔  The impact of glucose levels on diabetic complications

✔  What factors affect blood glucose levels?

You will study insulin’s role in the body and the effects of exogenous insulin. You will learn the time action profiles of various insulins and understand the challenges you face in simulating the work of the pancreas, so that you can make more informed and more confident insulin dosing decisions, so you can reduce blood glucose variability and unpredictability, alleviate stress and anxiety as you create a safer environment for your child.

Topics covered in this module:

✔  Why do humans need insulin to live?

✔  What is the goal of insulin therapy for T1D?

✔  What are the time-action profiles of insulin medications?

✔  What challenges do we face in simulating the work of the pancreas?

You will identify essential nutrients for human survival and food’s effects on blood glucose levels, and effects on insulin. You will learn which foods the body requires to survive and thrive and which foods to side—step that are non-essential to humans and make managing diabetes challenging. It is like making your way through a minefield with a map showing you the safest way through, so you can understand what to feed your child to safely achieve the goal of Type 1 diabetes management and ensure that they reach their full potential!

Topics covered in this module:

✔  What is metabolism?

✔  What roles do protein, carbs and fat play in the human body?

✔  What must humans eat to survive and thrive?

✔  What are the effects of foods on blood glucose levels?

You will learn why Type 1 diabetes requires a therapeutic nutrition strategy to improve the management and overall outcomes, so you gain confidence knowing that the strategy you will execute will improve your child’s health and their future.

Topics covered in this module:

✔  Why does T1D require a targeted nutrition strategy?

✔  What nutrition intervention helps stabilize blood glucose levels and manage T1D?

✔  What does it mean to reduce the carbs?

✔  Who should not follow a Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction (TCR)?

I will introduce you to foods specific to those with Type 1 diabetes that help stabilize blood glucose and meet your child’s body’s nutritional needs. You will have access to food lists, menus and resources giving you a head start, cutting through the confusion and giving you clarity, so you can feed your child with confidence helping them safely achieve normal blood glucose levels, and nourishing your child’s growing body to maximize their development and health to full potential. And please don’t worry, you don’t have to be a great cook! In fact, I’ll let you in on a secret. I’m not a great cook myself! So, I have prepared plans for all levels of skill in the kitchen, so you can save time, prepare healthy meals that are easy on blood sugars, and do what’s most important and that is spending more time with your family.

Topics covered in this module:

✔  What foods help stabilize blood glucose?

✔  What does it look like on a plate?

✔  How do I start to put this together?

✔  How do I grocery shop and get my kitchen ready?

I will guide you through a 3-step planning process to confidently create your family’s Type 1 diabetes management plan, which will provide you with clear and actionable steps, so you can save time and make it easier for you to manage your child’s Type 1 diabetes. It will be your compass and guide!

ENROL NOW

"With a newly diagnosed 4 year old, I was desperate for more tangible advice and guidance around food choices and nutritional considerations in general."

"I find it overwhelming to try and navigate and vet evidence-based information of the internet. I was looking for key resources and information that I can trust and rely on for guidance.

The program was very clearly structured and communicated. Each week's topic content was well organized, which helped in not feeling overwhelmed by the in-depth information.

The knowledge and resources were also incredibly helpful. My biggest takeaways were the actionable ideas and resources. I was able to troubleshoot and make specific adjustments to her nutrition that quickly had a positive impact on reducing spikes in BG levels. I now have a much better understanding of the impact of nutrition decisions and how to better manage her T1D after taking this course."

Unsure or scared...

I get it if you’re scared or thinking, “I don’t know if I can do this”… I felt exactly the same way when I first started.

I was scared!

At time time when my son was diagnosed, we were alone. There was not much out there. My husband and I came across a few YouTube videos and found a few books and research studies, scoured the internet to find someone we could talk to. Things were very new back then. We finally stumbled on a Facebook group which was still very new, with people implementing a Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction/Low-carb nutrition strategy.

And this is why I designed the program and added the support and community features. So you don't have to feel like I felt! You can feel confident that you came to the right place.

This program surrounds you with support so you won’t feel alone, so you get the support and answers you need, because Type 1 diabetes land can feel like a lonely place.

The program is a non-judgemental, safe environment in which you learn and discuss Type 1 diabetes, share your struggles, challenges, and celebrate your wins and successes.

And even if in the end, for reasons which are personal to you, you decide not to implement a Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction/Low-carb nutrition strategy for your child...that's OK!!!

You will still have benefited from the program as you will have gained more knowledgeable about managing Type 1 diabetes which will help your family and your child! And you will always have the knowledge and skills which you gained in the program, so if the time comes and you are ready to implement a Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction/Low-carb nutrition strategy for your child, you have all the knowledge and skills necessary!
