π£ Breaking News: Creating a new, national diabetes organization in the U.S. - The American Diabetes Society π£
May 09, 2024β‘οΈIn a groundbreaking development, Dr. Ken Berry, MD, has announced the establishment of the American Diabetes Society (ADS), a new, non-profit organization aimed at transforming how diabetes is treated.
At the time of writing, details about the organization are limited. Here’s what we know so far.
π From the visual image accompanying the announcement, it seems that Dr. Berry, alongside Dr. Eric Westman, MD, and Dr. Ben Bikman, PhD, have spearheaded the formation of the ADS.
- Dr. Ken Berry, MD, is a Board Certified Family Medicine Physician
- Dr. Eric Westman, MD, is an Internal Medicine Doctor, Medical Weight Management Specialist, and Primary Care Doctor at Duke Health in Durham, North Carolina, as well as an Associate Professor Medicine with twenty years of clinical and research experience.
- Dr. Bikman, PhD, is a professor of pathophysiology, a researcher, a diabetes and obesity scientist, and an Associate Professor at Brigham Young University.
π ADS mission: “Our mission is to empower individuals with diabetes to achieve normal blood sugar levels and maintain a healthy A1c, leading to a better quality of life and fewer complications” (American Diabetes Society, 2024). This mission will apply to individuals with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
π ADS priorities and commitments include:
-> Practical Support: comprehensive education for diabetes management, including information on dietary choices, low-carb recipes, and lifestyle tips for blood glucose management.
->Research, Education and Advocacy, and Public Policy Influence: with specific mentions about funding research for a cure for type 1 diabetes and for therapies helping type 2 diabetes reversal, educating healthcare professionals, advocating for dietary changes, and changing public policy and public perceptions about diabetes.
-> Transparency and Independence from Industry: the ADS commits to being financially transparent and to not accept financial donations from pharmaceutical or food manufacturers.
π Why is this new diabetes organization being spearheaded in the U.S.β
The ADS announcement states, “It has become clear that the American Diabetes Association has failed people with diabetes on multiple levels” (American Diabetes Society, 2024).
The formation of a new diabetes organization was first hinted by Dr. Berry in a YouTube video over a month ago in response to the poor outcomes and lack of practical, non-pharmaceutical interventions in the reversal of Type 2 diabetes and in the improvement of outcomes for those living with type 1 diabetes.
Dr. Berry highlighted several key concerns with the existing approach to diabetes management:
-> The Diabetes Epidemic: Dr. Berry pointed out that more than 38 million Americans have diabetes, with another 90 million likely having pre-diabetes. He criticized the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for poor education on early diagnosis, leading to many cases remaining undiagnosed.
-> Complications and Deaths: Over 100,000 Americans die annually from diabetes complications, with type 2 diabetes accounting for the majority. Dr. Berry emphasized that, unlike other chronic diseases, type 2 diabetes can be reversible with dietary changes.
-> ADA's Silence on Reversal: Despite research supporting the effectiveness of low-carb, ketogenic, or carnivore diets in achieving remission, Dr. Berry states the ADA remains silent on this issue.
-> ADA's Dietary Guidelines: Dr. Berry criticized the ADA for not actively promoting dietary interventions such as low-carb diets, despite acknowledging their effectiveness in their guidelines.
-> Financial Interests: Dr. Berry raised concerns about the ADA's substantial funding from pharmaceutical and food companies, suggesting a potential influence on its stance regarding dietary and recipe recommendations.
π₯ During the video, Dr. Berry suggested that a new diabetes association was needed to underscore the need for better approaches to diabetes management, one which prioritizes the health of those living with diabetes over financial interests.
π¨This discussion also ties into a recent article in The Guardian 'Does the American Diabetes Association work for patients or companies? A lawsuit dared to ask.', which reported on the American Diabetes Association's lawsuit settlement related to the acceptance of corporate funding in exchange for recommendations that may adversely affect those living with diabetes. π¨
