“This doesn’t seem to be working. My child doesn’t feel well, and the whole family’s stress level is through the roof – there has got to be a better way.”

Break free from the blood glucose roller coaster, alleviate your stress and frustration, gain confidence, making diabetes management more controllable, leading your child to a happier, brighter, healthier future!

As the parent of a child living with type 1 diabetes, it’s not unusual to have similar thoughts creep into your mind multiple times per week.

Truly, life with T1D can feel like being trapped on a wildly stressful, very un-fun roller coaster that your family never asked to be on in the first place.

Around one corner, you’re navigating the pitfalls of low blood sugar: racing heart, irritability, mood swings, brain fog, and nausea. Dealing with a cranky kid is hard enough, but when your child never really feels well? It’s heartbreaking.

Over the next loop, you’re facing down dire potential long-term health outcomes – like amputation, heart disease, kidney dialysis, vision loss, or even premature death – that come with blood sugar being too high for too long. Lovely! One more thing to stack onto your precarious mental Jenga tower of dread!

Then there are the ups and downs of waking up at 2:00 AM to either administer insulin or treat a hypo, prodding your tearful child to finish their dinner because you’ve already given insulin, and the pain of seeing them have to watch from the sidelines while their friends play.

And, of course, we can’t forget about the constant worry: what about school? Birthday parties? Sports? Restaurants? Travel? Going off to university? Growing up and starting a family? Will my child feel different? Will people understand? How will we cover the added expenses?

The mental load you’re carrying is never-ending. It’s almost like having an additional, extra-demanding full-time job on top of all of life’s other responsibilities… and the stakes are literally life and death.

What you want most of all is for your child to be mentally, emotionally, and physically healthy. You want them to feel their best, grow, reach for their dreams, and truly thrive – all while enjoying a life that’s as “normal” as possible.

The more you think about it, the more it seems like there’s one big thing getting in the way: the common “You don’t have to change the way you eat” approach doesn’t appear to be working very well for your child.

In some cases, your child’s care team might even be telling you that you’re doing great. But when you look at those roller coaster numbers – combined with the way your whole family is living – it sure doesn’t feel like you’re anywhere close to “doing great.”

There has got to be a better way… doesn’t there?

----- ↓ -----

How incredible would it be if you had a nutrition strategy that could help your child safely achieve normal blood glucose & A1C levels and reduce the risk of both acute & long-term diabetic complications – all while decreasing stress for the whole family?

The good news: there is such a thing, and there’s a significant chance you’ve already heard of it!

It’s called Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction – often abbreviated as TCR – which is just a fancy way of saying “a low-carb way of eating.”

Here’s how it works:

By relying on foods that have little effect on blood sugar, you’re helping to keep your child’s blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible. And, by keeping your child’s blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible, you’re reducing the chances of both short- and long-term diabetic complications.

This also means that…

✅ Your child can finally experience fewer of the highs and lows that come with constantly trying to over-correct with food and insulin

✅ Your child feels better on a daily basis

✅ Life gets easier for your child and for you

✅ Stress levels for the entire family decrease (hello, sleeping through the night again!)

✅ You’ll feel more confident when it comes to managing your child’s T1D – and teaching them to do the same!

✅ You’re actively protecting your child’s future and quality of life

A Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction nutrition strategy has been incredible for our family and for dozens of the families we’ve worked with over the years, but it’s not as simple as cutting out carbs and moving on with life.

Why? Because it’s crucial that your child receives the right nutrients in order to grow and develop into their full potential, which requires a clear understanding of how type 1 diabetes works in the body and how to strive for normal blood glucose levels.

That’s where we can help.

“Type 1 diabetes? What is that? And what, exactly, is a carb?”

It’s something I remember asking shortly after our son, Lachlan, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 9.

As you know, when a T1D diagnosis enters your life, the questions come fast and furious. While I was feeling overwhelmed and embarrassed trying to process what the dietitian was saying, my husband, Matt, pulled an all-nighter with Doctor Google to try to learn more about what we were up against.

We quickly learned that individuals diagnosed with type 1 diabetes can face dire long- and short-term risks, including reduced quality of life and even premature death. We also learned that one of the best ways to reduce the risk of these complications was to keep the blood sugar level as close to normal as possible – just as the body of someone without T1D tries to do.

So, Matt wondered, how do you manage T1D to achieve normal blood sugars?

It seemed like no matter what we did, Lachlan’s blood glucose would swing from high to low and back again. Meanwhile, our care team told us we were doing great.

Eventually, after countless hours of research, deep dives, going down the rabbit hole, and even combing through the work of Dr. Richard Bernstein, our family – along with the support and guidance of our son’s care team – implemented a very-low carb diet to see if it would help normalized Lachlan’s blood glucose levels.

It worked.

Our son’s blood glucose levels were steadier, and his A1C was in normal range. The best part? He finally seemed like himself again. The stress and anxiety we’d been dealing with dissipated.

But still, we wondered: don’t kids need carbs to grow? How do we make sure he’s getting everything he needs in his diet? Are we doing the right thing?

That’s when I decided to pursue my Clinical Nutrition Degree by enrolling in a Master of Science program. Now, as a Certified Nutrition Specialist and a Licensed Nutritionist, I use nutrition therapy to support people with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and general metabolic health.

I’m here to share what I’ve learned as a clinical professional and as a mother to a child living with T1D so that parents like you can get access to the knowledge and support they need to feel more confident in their caregiving and make diabetes easier to manage.

This is the program I wish had existed when our son was first diagnosed.

"This course, expertly presented by a professional in the field as well as parents of a T1D, is a must for all those impacted by T1D, whether it is early in the process of adapting to a "new normal" or in my case, helping to refine the understanding and treatment of T1D as a parent of a young adult who follows a low-carb approach and wants to safely and better control her blood sugar as she becomes more independent.

I would also highly recommend this course for anyone treating T1D to better understand the complexities of working with families and loved ones of T1D."

Module 2: Insulin and How it Works in the Body

In Module 2, you’ll continue to build on your knowledge of blood glucose regulation by delving into insulin’s role in the body as well as the effects of exogenous insulin. Why? When you understand how insulin products work, you can better apply that knowledge to use insulin to more safely meet the body’s needs.

You’ll cover:

✔ Why humans need insulin to live
✔ The goal for insulin therapy with T1D
✔ The time-action profiles of insulin medications
✔ The challenges we face in stimulating the work of the pancreas
✔ Types of insulin
✔ Your child’s insulin regimen and time-action profiles

Module 3: Food, Metabolism, and Nutrients

Welcome to Module 3, which is all about food! Obviously, your child needs nutrients to grow and develop to their full potential. When you understand which foods have the greatest impact on blood glucose and why, you can replace them with foods that are still incredibly nourishing while making diabetes easier to manage.

That’s why, in Module 3, you’ll have two mini-missions: identify essential nutrients for human survival and identify food’s effects on blood glucose levels.

We’ll focus on:

✔ What is metabolism?
✔ What role do protein, carbohydrates, and fat play in the human body?
✔ What humans must eat to survive and thrive
✔ How and why foods affect blood glucose
✔ Using the Cronometer Food Diary

Module 4: What to Eat

Now that you’ve built a solid foundation of knowledge around insulin, blood glucose, and what the human body needs, it’s time to move on to Stage 2, where you’ll learn more about therapeutic nutrition strategies specifically for type 1 diabetes.

In Module 4, you’ll learn how to choose foods that help stabilize blood glucose levels while also meeting your or your child’s nutritional needs. By reducing variability in blood glucose and safely striving for normal blood glucose, you can reduce stress and anxiety, the risk of hypoglycemia, and the risk of long-term diabetic complications.

By the time you’ve completed Module 4, you’ll be ready to create your family’s What to Eat List, plan your meals, prepare your kitchen, and begin grocery shopping!

You’ll delve into:

✔ Precautions you must have in place before making dietary changes and what you need to know to keep your child safe while managing T1D
✔ The foods that help stabilize blood glucose
✔ What does it look like on the plate?
✔ How to begin to put it all together
✔ How to grocery shop and prepare your kitchen
✔ Creating your family’s What to Eat List
✔ Food lists, grocery cheat sheets, meal ideas, and recipes for low-carb breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks

Module 5: Insulin Use for TCR

In Module 5, you’ll get to put everything you’ve learned so far to use in getting clear on how to use food to help you safely strive for normal blood glucose levels and better diabetes outcomes, and we will turn our attention to insulin, and how to use insulin when adopting a therapeutic carbohydrate reduction nutrition strategy for type 1 diabetes.

By the time you’ve completed Module 5, you’ll be ready to create your family’s What to Eat List, plan your meals, prepare your kitchen, begin grocery shopping, and how to use insulin appropriately!

You’ll explore:

✔ What clinical guidelines exist for insulin dosing for low carb, high protein, and/or fat containing foods.

Wondering what it really looks like to use food as an ally in T1D management?

Whether Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction is a new concept for you or if you’ve dabbled a bit in TCR in the past, we know you probably have some questions about what using this nutrition strategy might actually look like in your daily life – so, let’s jump right in, shall we?

→ “Low-carb? Does that mean I'm going to be feeding my child a diet that's boring, repetitive, and restrictive?”
It does not, but we can understand how you might think that – it’s a common misconception, especially since terms like “low carb” aren’t always used correctly and can carry so much cultural baggage!

In reality, you’ll be relying on flavorful, nourishing meals that are rich in vegetables, proteins, and healthy fats.

Here’s an example of what your menu on a typical Wednesday could look like:

● Breakfast: Spinach and Sausage Egg Muffins
● Lunch: Chipotle Lime Chicken with Veggies
● Snack: Ham & Cheese Rolls
● Dinner: Taco Salad with Beef

Sounds pretty good, right?

→ “Is TCR healthy and safe? Doesn’t the human body need carbs to live? Will my child still grow? Is there a risk that this will lead to disordered eating?”
These are great questions and valid concerns! No one wants to deprive their children of the nutrients they need to grow, thrive, and live life to the fullest.

Would you be surprised to learn that carbohydrate is a non-essential nutrient? That’s right – as long as enough dietary protein and fat are consumed, the human body is capable of making glucose to fuel its needs, which means that carbohydrates are not actually required for humans to survive and thrive.

That’s why Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction works so well for managing type 1 diabetes – it’s a low-carb nutrition strategy that involves choosing foods that both stabilize blood glucose and meet the nutritional needs of your growing child.

We had the same worries of “Will our son grow? Are we doing the right thing?” when our family first began using TCR. But Lachlan has grown just fine – at 17, he’s now a competitive athlete.

Also, this way of eating is not about demonizing sugar or carbs or labeling certain foods “bad” or “good” – it’s simply about focusing on the foods that support an individual with T1D’s body functions and nutritional needs best.

→ “My doctor has never mentioned TCR as an option. Shouldn’t I talk to them first?”
Yes, absolutely! As you probably know, any changes to the diet of a person with T1D can have severe medical consequences. An insulin dosing plan should always be in place, and you should always consult your healthcare team.

Over the years, we – and many of the families we’ve worked with – have found that some of our endocrinology teams were either not aware of or not well-versed in Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction as an option for T1D management. If that’s the case for you, we’re happy to speak with them!

We also want to be clear that we’re not here to tell you what to eat or how to manage your diabetes. That’s obviously up to you and your medical team. Instead, we want you to have the information you need to understand the role nutrition plays in diabetes outcomes so that you, your family, and your care team can make the best possible decisions.

→ “Changing the way my family eats sounds a little daunting.”
We hear this often from parents, so you’re not alone! It makes sense, too: if you’re already riding the ups and downs of the blood glucose roller coaster, adding one more challenge to the mix can feel insurmountable.

But what if changing the way your family eats is the first step in making things a little easier for everyone? Plus, sticking to a reduced-carb, low-carb, or very low-carb diet is easier than ever now, especially since most grocery stores and restaurants offer low-carb options.

You don’t have to take our word for it, though. Here’s what Jaime, a parent and recent graduate of The Nutrition Effect, had to say:

I came in with the mindset that this would be a challenging nutritional goal, but it wasn’t as drastic a change as we initially imagined. When we sit down to meals, my daughter’s plate looks like a rainbow. Looking at the food we eat now, it’s really not that big of a shift from the kinds of meals we had been eating. - Jaime Z.

Still not sure if The Nutrition Effect is right for you? Take a look at a few of our frequently asked questions:

Q: Does my whole family need to participate?
A: You have several options here! This nutrition strategy typically works best when at least one parent eats the same food that the child with T1D eats.

Many of the families we’ve worked with have seen great success by starting with the whole family participating in the beginning. Then, as stress levels calm down and they settle into a routine that works for them, they have space to reassess which parents and siblings will continue to participate.

Q: I don’t cook… like, at all. Will The Nutrition Effect still be helpful?
A: While what you’ll learn in the program will most likely be helpful, we’ll be honest: if you don’t cook at all, this course might not be the best fit. Why? Because it can be quite challenging to adhere to TCR when you’re not cooking the majority of your family’s meals at home.

That said, if you’re willing to learn to cook and try out a few simple recipes, The Nutrition Effect might be right for you!

Q: I’m considering the Guided Group Program, but either 1) my child is newly diagnosed or 2) our family has already been navigating T1D for several years. Can I still join?
A: Great question! YES – as long as you’re interested in learning how to create a nutrition plan that helps you safely manage your child’s blood glucose through food, you’re in the right place.

In each cohort of The Nutrition Effect, we have some families who have their child’s T1D management down to a science, while others have only just received a diagnosis and are working to figure out what their new “normal” looks like. No matter where you are in your child’s journey with type 1 diabetes – whether you have a million questions or you’ve been there, done that, and are ready to share some of your hard-won knowledge with other parents – you’ll be welcomed, supported, and in good company.

Q: I’m an adult living with type 1 diabetes, and I’m interested in learning more about TCR. Is this course right for me?
A: We’re so glad you’re here! As long as you’re ok with content that’s geared toward parents of children living with T1D, we think you’ll find lots of useful information in the self-paced version of The Nutrition Effect. If you’d like information that’s a little more personalized, though, please feel free to schedule a 1:1 with Beth !

Q: I have a question that isn’t answered here. How can I get in touch?
A: Please email us and we’ll be happy to get you the information you need in order to determine whether The Nutrition Effect is the best fit for your family.

A T1D diagnosis does not have to mean that you or your child are doomed to a life of stress, worry, overcorrecting with insulin, missing out on special opportunities, or facing down daunting health complications

You don’t have to spend the rest of your life feeling trapped on a roller coaster, muddling through sleepless nights, watching your child struggle, or feeling crushed with worry over what their future might hold.

It is possible to gain a greater understanding of the interplay between T1D, the body, and nutrition.

It is possible to feel more confident as a parent and as a caregiver.

It is possible to create a nutrition plan – one that’s personalized to your family – that nourishes your child’s growing body and helps normalize their blood glucose levels.

It is possible to use food to help you safely strive for better diabetes outcomes.

A happier, healthier, brighter future is 100% in your reach.

We’re here to help you get there.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"With a newly diagnosed 4 year old, I was desperate for more tangible advice and guidance around food choices and nutritional considerations in general."

"I find it overwhelming to try and navigate and vet evidence-based information of the internet. I was looking for key resources and information that I can trust and rely on for guidance.

The program was very clearly structured and communicated. Each week's topic content was well organized, which helped in not feeling overwhelmed by the in-depth information.

The knowledge and resources were also incredibly helpful. My biggest takeaways were the actionable ideas and resources. I was able to troubleshoot and make specific adjustments to her nutrition that quickly had a positive impact on reducing spikes in BG levels. I now have a much better understanding of the impact of nutrition decisions and how to better manage her T1D after taking this course."
