Supporting Families with T1D: A Look Back and A Glimpse Forward

Apr 22, 2024

Hello, everyone! I hope you’re all doing well!

I'm here with some exciting updates in the world of Type 1 diabetes nutrition. First, I’ll share what’s been happening across our T1D community and then I’ll tell you what’s new here at T1D Nutrition.

First off, in 2024, our community has seen some fantastic developments, including Low Carb USA’s clinical workshop focusing on T1D. If you haven’t already watched these presentations, they are free to watch on Low Carb USA’s YouTube channel.

Additionally, I’ve been collaborating on a Guide for Dietitians and Nutritionists on Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction (TCR) in Type 1 diabetes, aimed at providing valuable resources for healthcare professionals as well as individuals and families with T1D, who can share this guide with their diabetes care teams. Last week, we submitted this comprehensive guide for review, and I’m eagerly looking forward to its publication, which is planned for September.

I am also eagerly awaiting the publication of an upcoming consensus statement on TCR in T1D which is scheduled to be released by the Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners in the United States.

Reflecting on my work with families over the past 1.5 years, I've realized the immense stress and strain that managing diabetes can place on parents and on individuals living with T1D. I sense many people feel alone or may feel distressed and don’t know who to turn to.

I meet with parents who can be hard on themselves, couples who disagree on how to manage their child’s diabetes, parents who feel stuck, parents who are confused about how to make things better for their child… for their whole family… for their marriage; parents who are scared for their child to run around or play sports due to the fear of hypos. I meet with some families where one parent does everything to manage diabetes and no other person exists in that child’s life that could help them manage T1D or take the burden off that caregiver for two days or even two hours. These are just some of the things I ‘ve been reflecting on recently. It’s clear that more support is needed. That’s why I’m advocating for more open conversations within our community, to lift each other up and share experiences.

To contribute further, I have updated our Nutrition Effect program here at T1D Nutrition to provide even more support for families navigating diabetes and nutrition. Our next guided group program starts on May 6th, offering expert guidance and community support for parents of children with T1D. Visit our T1D Nutrition Programs webpage for more details!

We also recently conducted a survey to gather feedback on which elements of T1D management you find especially stressful or difficult to navigate. Your responses have been invaluable, and we're gearing up to address these concerns through webinars, shared resources, and informative booklets.

I’m thrilled to announce I will host some upcoming webinars which will cover topics like low-carb dining out with T1D, managing picky eating, caregiver stress, and understanding the impact of protein on blood glucose levels. I hope these sessions provide you with valuable insights and allow us to come together in the community to join in conversation. And I’m going to be asking you which of these webinars you want me to host first, so stay tuned for that!

Exciting times are ahead, and I’m committed to providing support and fostering community within the T1D community. The more we help ourselves, the more we can set up our kids for a brighter future! If you have any questions or ideas to share, I’m all ears!
