Exploring Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction in T1D - Practical strategies for diabetes educators
Aug 20, 2025Hi everyone!
I’m heading to the Australasian Diabetes Conference on the Gold Coast in Australia this week, where I’ll be presenting a symposium with my colleague, Amy Rush. Amy is a credentialled diabetes educator and dietitian in Australia, and one of my co-authors on the international publication Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction in Type 1 Diabetes: A Guide for Dietitians and Nutritionists, that we released last year with fellow authors, Franziska Spritzler, Dr. Caroline Roberts, and Dr. Andrew Koutnik.
This week, Amy and I will be working with diabetes educators and other healthcare providers on how to support individuals and families with T1D who want to use a Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction (TCR) nutrition strategy.
We’ll be covering why many people with T1D choose low-carb, how care teams can support them, and what the research says about the benefits of Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction. We’ll also share practical guidance on insulin adjustments for low-carb meals—especially how protein and fat affect blood glucose and the insulin options available.
And thanks to you—we’ll be showing a variety of nutritious low-carb meals and family favourites so clinicians can see what this looks like in real life. We received so many awesome examples of meals, snacks, and even desserts—it’s a fantastic way to show what low-carb really looks like on a plate.
I’m so grateful for this community, and I’ll share more updates soon!
