Hi, my name is Beth McNally, I’m a Certified Nutrition Specialist and a licensed dietitian-nutritionist.

My family’s T1D story began in 2015 when my son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 9. At the outset, we followed the conventional approach and learned to carb count for the 220 grams of carbohydrate that my son would be eating daily.

And right away, something felt off. My husband and I just didn’t seem to be very good at it. No matter how hard we tried, my son’s blood glucose seemed to be on a roller coaster. His blood sugar would spike high after meals and then come crashing down as we tried to prevent hypoglycemia.

We were constantly on alert and worried about him, felt frustrated and anxious, and just couldn’t believe that life was supposed to forever be like this.

So two months in, our family implemented a nutritional approach specific to managing Type 1 diabetes, so we could bring my son’s blood glucose levels safely into normal range.

And while we were able to bring his blood glucose levels into normal range, which reduced a lot of anxiety and stress in our lives, I didn’t really understand what was going on in the body. Were we causing more harm than good? What does his body actually need to be healthy? Will he grow?  Is what we’re doing okay?

I decided to enrol in a Master of Science program and started my clinical nutrition degree.

Now, years later, utilizing my clinical expertise, academic knowledge, and daily experience in managing my own son’s Type 1 diabetes, I have designed a course for parents, that I wished had existed when my son was first diagnosed.

I want to share what I’ve learned as a clinical nutrition professional and as a mother of a child with T1D, to help you access the knowledge and support you need.

I created The Nutrition Effect program with you in mind – fellow moms and dads, who every day, make sure their child with T1D is safe and who want to transform into a more confident and empowered caregiver who feels more in control.

In the program, we will decode some mysteries about Type 1 diabetes as you build your knowledge about the interplay between blood glucose, insulin, and food, and you will learn how to feed your child to get better diabetes outcomes.

And your mission in this program – should you choose to accept it – is to create a personalized Type 1 diabetes nutrition plan that helps to safely achieve normal blood sugar levels and nourish your child's growing body, so you can get off the blood sugar roller coaster, alleviate stress, and manage diabetes with more confidence.

I appreciate that your diabetes journey is your own. I am not here to convince you to eat a certain way or manage diabetes a certain way – that is completely up to you and your family and your diabetes care team. People will use what they learn in this course in different ways.

But I believe every family should be provided with this information and every child with T1D be given the opportunity to safely achieve normal blood glucose levels, so you can reduce their risk of developing diabetic complications and your child with T1D can be raised to be as healthy as their siblings and friends.

Parents who have taken our Nutrition Effect program call it a “must for all those impacted by T1D”, :”the best overview of T1D and blood glucose I have ever heard”, and that they went from feeling “overwhelmed trying to navigate and vet evidence-based information on the internet to a program that gave them a much better understanding of the impact of nutrition decisions and and was very clearly structured with actionable items and resources that allowed them to troubleshoot and make specific adjustments to their child’s nutrition that quickly had a positive impact”.
