Transformative Habits: Parenting, Identity, and Managing Type 1 Diabetes through Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction/Low-carb Nutrition Strategy
Dec 28, 2023In early December, I started reading a book titled Atomic Habits by James Clear (https://jamesclear.com/atomic-habits).
A fantastic book, and one I highly recommend!
The book offers hands-on guidance for cultivating positive habits, overcoming detrimental ones, and gaining proficiency in the small actions that contribute to extraordinary outcomes. In essence, habits act as the foundation upon which success is built, creating a path towards continuous improvement, self-mastery, and the realization of one's full potential.
π― "Your habits shape your identity, and then your identity shapes your habits."
Habits play a pivotal role in shaping not just what we do but, perhaps more importantly, who we become. The interplay between habits and identity is a profound force that can influence the trajectory of our personal and professional journeys.
In the book, James provides a number of examples to illustrate the relationship between habits and identity.
For example,
“When you make your bed each day, you embody the identity of an organized person.”
“…who is the type of person who could write a book? Well, it's probably someone who is consistent and reliable.”
π― "Your behavior is usually a reflection of your identity. What you do is an indication of the type of person you believe you are either consciously or non-consciously."
In Chapter 2, James outlines that the process involves deciding the type of person you want to be, proving it to yourself with small wins, and reinforcing your desired identity through consistent actions.
To do so, you need to ask yourself the following questions:
1οΈβ£ What do you want to stand for β
2οΈβ£ What are your principles and valuesβ
3οΈβ£ Who do you wish to become β
As I read this book, it naturally prompted me to reflect on the habits of parents who adopt a Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction/low-carb nutrition strategy to manage their child's Type 1 diabetes.
Let’s consider each of the above three questions.
