🌟 Attention Parents of Children with Type 1 Diabetes! 🌟

Struggling to maintain stable blood sugar levels for your child with Type 1 diabetes? Discover a life changing approach to Type 1 diabetes management that goes beyond the conventional method.

πŸ” Recent research further confirms a crucial link between meal macronutrients and postprandial glycemic variability in youth with Type 1 diabetes:

🍚 Carbohydrates: Higher content increases variability.
πŸ₯‘ Fat: Surprisingly, higher fat content reduces variability.
πŸ— Protein: Higher protein content also reduces variability.

πŸ‘‰TL;DR: meals high in carbohydrates resulted in increased postprandial glycemic variability, while meals prioritising protein showed reduced variability.

Parents of children with Type 1 diabetes face the ongoing challenge of balancing daily therapy to mimic normal blood sugar and reduce the risk of hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic events.

πŸ†The objective is clear: strive for stable, normal blood sugar levels to prevent potential long-term complications associated with prolonged hyperglycemia.

⏱ A recent study has delved into an essential aspect of this journey, examining how the macronutrient content in typical meals influences postprandial glycemic variability in youth with Type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Understanding the nuances of meal choices is crucial for parents navigating the complex landscape of managing their child's blood sugar levels effectively.

The study's insights provide valuable guidance for tailoring meals to the specific needs of children with T1D, offering a nuanced approach that goes beyond merely counting carbohydrates.

1️⃣ Study Objective:
To explore how the macronutrient content of typical, free-living meals influences postprandial glycemic variability in youth with T1D.

2️⃣ Method:
• Large observational study (T1DEXIP study) included 208 youth living with T1D across the United States.
• Aged between 12 and 17 years, diagnosed with T1D for at least three months, and reporting a moderate or high level of physical activity.
• Mean age of 14 years, mean HbA1c of 7.1%, mean BMI percentile of 61%, and mean T1D duration of 5.4 years.
• Youth participated in the study observation period for approximately 10 days.
• CGM data were collected during the observation period, with Dexcom G6 users continuing to use their personal CGM, and non-users using a blinded Dexcom G6 pro sensor.
• Insulin pump data were collected when available.

3️⃣ Results:
• Carbohydrates: Greater postprandial glycemic variability, and standard deviation was observed with higher carbohydrate content in meals.
• Fat: Contrary to the researchers’ hypothesis, less postprandial glycemic variability was observed with higher fat content in meals after adjusting for carbohydrates.
• Protein: Also contrary to the researchers’ hypothesis, less postprandial glycemic variability was observed with higher protein content in meals after adjusting for carbohydrates.

🏁 Study Conclusion:
Overall, the results indicate that higher carbohydrate content in meals is associated with increased postprandial glycemic variability in youth with Type 1 diabetes.
